Top Outdoor COVID friendly Activities Near us

With another Summer of staycations on the horizon, we want to ensure all our guests are not short of activities to explore during their break to The Maryborough. We have put together a list of some of the top outdoor COVID friendly activities close to The Maryborough to keep all the family entertained this summer. All of the actvities listed below are only a few minutes drive from the hotel so you don't have to worry about wasting loads of time spent travelling in the car!

Curraghbinny Woods

Curraghbinny Wood is located in a most beautiful setting on a prominent hill overlooking Cork Harbour. It is a compact wood, covering just 35 hectares but its beauty punches way about its size. It has an old world feel largely due to the amount of carriage paths running through the wood and its location close to the stunning architecture of the Terrace and the Villas at Curraghbinny Pier. With the woods only a 15 minute drive from The Maryborough it is the perfect spot for a romantic stroll or to explore with the kids.

Blackrock Castle & Marina

Blackrock Castle is a castellated fortification located at Blackrock, about 2 km from Cork city centre on the banks of the River Lee. The castle is about a 10-minute drive from The Maryborough. Enjoy a scenic walk along the river, grab a coffee, pastry or sandwich from the cute cafes that look out onto the marina or why not pop up to Corks new Marina food and craft market where you can purchase take away food, drinks and crafts with options to appeal to all. Park at Harty's Quay which is a 3 minute drive from the hotel and the walk to Blackrock Castle is about 30 minutes.

Tramore Valley Park

Tramore Valley Park is a park on the southside of Cork, only a 5 minute drive from The Maryborough. With an area of approximately 160 acres there is plenty of room for exploration as the park boasts a BMX track, Rugby pitch, outdoor gym and the dome which is centrally located in the Park with stunning views of Cork City. Many of the Iconic landmarks of the City can be viewed from this point, such as Shandon Bells and the Elysian Tower. On a sunny day it will be one of the best places to be in Cork.

Hop Island

Nestled on an island in Cork Harbour, Hop Island Equestrian Centre offers you tranquility in a rural setting, while just a 5 minute drive from The Maryborough. Hop Island cater for all levels of horsemanship. They provide qualified instruction for all ages, from beginners to advanced riders, with quality horses and ponies for all levels of riding. Hop Island Equestrian Centre consists of a large Indoor Arena, an Outdoor Arena, school horse stables, livery stables, pony stalls, a tack room, a feed room, a schooling cross country course which includes jumps, banks and ditches, access to our very own private pebbled coastline and Hop Island House. Another wonderful activity to enjoy this summer with all the family.

Cork Harbour Boat Tours

Known as one of Cork's #1 Outdoor Activities, Cork Harbour Boat Hire allows you to explore the vast depths of Cork Harbour on a fantastic boating adventure. We pride ourselves on offering you a boating experience to remember! Whether it is on the Self-Drive Boats, High-Speed Ribs or Sailing Tours, they have something for everyone. This is an ideal day out in Cork for groups of all ages and sizes. A 7 minute drive from The Maryborough will take you to the ferry which will take you over to Cobh Harbour in a short ride where you will embark on your harbour tour.

Walking trails

We are surrounded by beautiful scenic trails that are perfect for a stroll or brisk walk. Here are two of our favourites:
Blackrock to Mahon 8K: This is one of the most popular locations in Cork City for running and walking. Located just 3 kms east of the city centre, most of the route is on public walkways and is mostly free of traffic. It has largely flat with nice scenic views out over the river and harbour areas. Very easy to navigate as you are either following the river or staying on the public walkways. Check it out here.

Rochestown/Blackrock Loop: Just under 10km. A flat walk with a couple of minor climbs so it is the perfect place for the kids to bring their bikes and burn off some energy! Park at Harty's Quay which is a 3 minute drive from the hotel and the walk to Blackrock Castle is about 30 minutes.

Oldcourt Garryduff Woods: is a mixed woodland of approximately 26 hectares, located close to the southern suburbs of Cork city, only a few minutes from The Maryborough Hotel. It has historical links back to eminent families from Cork such as the Ronaynes, Goolds and O’ Sheas. Notable features include walls and some old ruins associated with the adjoining estate and a number of small streams that flow through the woodland on their way out to Cork Harbour.

There are significant sections of old broadleaved woodland to be found throughout the property along with stands of conifer trees at the southern end. There are some wonderful mature specimen Horse Chestnuts and Sycamore along the verges of the forest tracks that traverse the woods.

A surprising find so close to The Maryborough with loads of room for all the family to explore.

If you have any questions about the above amenities or about activities in the area, please don't hesittate to call or visit reception during your stay and we will be happy to help.
