Meet the Team: Brian Corkery, Spa & Club Manager

With a new year comes new beginnings, and we’re especially excited about this one!

Our staff are an integral part of the culture here at the hotel, and we absolutely love to hear stories from guests as to how our team has helped improve their Maryborough experience. In 2014, we want to give you a glimpse into the lives of the people behind The Maryborough, so we’ve decided to start a Meet the Team blog series.

To kick things off, we would like to introduce Brian Corkery, a recent addition to the team at The Maryborough Hotel & Spa. Brian is our new Spa and Club Manager and brings with him a wealth of knowledge with over 20 years in the wellness industry.

Growing up in Cobh, Brian was always involved in sports, playing everything from hurling and football to volleyball and basketball. He continues to play basketball once a week and coaches the under 16s in Ballincollig. Brian went to college at the Waterford Institute of Technology where he received a degree in Business Studies and Recreational Management. While attending, he met his wife who was in the same course and also continues to work in the fitness industry. They married in 1996 and have two children, a boy and a girl.

Upon finishing college, Brian traveled to the United States to work for the summer. When he returned, the new centre had opened in Blarney, and he started there as a full-time lifeguard. He was later promoted to Supervisor and worked his way up to Manager, a position he held for 10 years.

When Blarney Park closed, Brian went to England to further his education and explore new areas. He completed three CHEK courses: Exercise Coach, Introductory Holistic Lifestyle Coach, and Golf Specialist.

Returning to Cork, Brian then started in the Kingsley Hotel as the Health Club & Spa Manager. After working there for 18 months, the flood of 2009 hit, devastating the hotel. He stayed with the company until a position became available in Midleton Park in 2011. There, Brian was the Leisure Centre Manager for 2 years before becoming part of The Maryborough team.

New Maryborough Club & Spa Manager

Why the health and fitness industry? I’ve always had an interest in sports and chose my college course because half was business and the other half sports, which meant less classroom time. Since then, I’ve taken a big interest in the wellness side of things, looking at someone from a holistic point of view. It’s not just about getting fit, we need to look after what we eat, our time spent in rest and relaxation, regular exercise, and having fun in our lives.

When I’m dealing with clients one-on-one, that’s where I’m starting from. Sometimes a typical exercise regimen is not the best thing, it might be better for an individual to do yoga or Tai Chi. I want to be able to develop the best solution for my clients with where they’re at right now. People are getting used to waking up with aches and pains, getting headaches at a certain time of day, finding caffeine necessary in the morning. These things don’t have to be your way of life. You should be able to complete a work day and still have enough energy to play with your kids in the evening, to live your life. I enjoy helping people reach that goal.

Why The Maryborough? While working in the Kingsley, who had comparable facilities, The Maryborough would have been their direct competition. I was always looking to see what The Maryborough was doing as they were one of the premier clubs in the city. Once this position came up, I didn’t have to think twice about applying for it. Having previous knowledge of the facilities and the staff spiked my interest.

What is the best thing about working here? I really enjoy working with The Maryborough team and having the opportunity to meet and interact with the members of the Club and our clients in the Spa. Plus, this position offers new challenges that I look forward to embracing.

What do you want visitors to The Maryborough Club & Spa to experience? I want to ensure they get the best possible experience we can give them every time they visit. I want them to get the best relaxation or to get the best out of a specific workout. That they know and believe we can facilitate their personal goals and needs. I want them to go away from our facilities with a smile on their face having found enjoyment in their activity, whatever it may be. Our staff are here to facilitate that experience as much as possible. We have the best facilities, the best treatments, and a gorgeous location, but our team is so important to the overall experience.

What is your favourite part of the hotel? I love the drive from the main gate, down past the trees. It is like an oasis of calm and does not feel like driving to work. Within the hotel, the thermal suite is my favourite area. It is so calming and relaxing.

We hope you enjoyed this first installment of our Meet the Team series. Want to get to know more people on The Maryborough Club team? Head over to our Club webpage or pop in to say hello!
