What is interval training?

Interval training combines short, high intensity bursts of speed, with slow, recovery phases, repeated during one exercise session.It is a method of training where you increase and decrease the intensity of your workout between aerobic and anaerobic training. The Benefits of Interval Training

• Interval training leads to many physiological changes including an increase in cardiovascular efficiency (the ability to deliver oxygen to the working muscles) as well as increased tolerance to the build-up of lactic acid. These changes result in improved performance, greater speed, and endurance. By performing high intensity intervals that produce lactic acid during practice, the body adapts and burns lactic acid more efficiently during exercise. This means athletes can exercise at a higher intensity for a longer period of time before fatigue or pain slows them down. It can improve fitness quickly.

• Interval Training improves the ability to burn fat

The muscle carbohydrate reserves, glycogen, is almost exhausted thorough interval training. It may seem a little backwards to think that improved fat burning is one of the many benefits of interval training because carbohydrates are used as the main source for fuel. On the contrary, once the glycogen reserves have been exhausted replacement is necessary through the fuel source fat. Hours after you have completed your workout, you will continue to reap the benefits of interval training because your body will use up fat replacing the depleted glycogen.
