Learn about the famous Irish whiskey
As Irish, we admit we love our drink. But in our defence, who could blame us when the very best whiskeys are on our doorstep. The Jameson distillery has pride of place in the small, yet bustling town of Midleton, east Cork. It was established in 1780 and has proved itself a popular tipple.
The distillery is made up of a bar, the Malt restaurant, an education centre, a tour and a gift shop. The tour pays homage to an incredible legacy and will whisk you back through the ages to discover the secrets of Jameson.
There are plenty of gifts and drinks in the gift shop. No trip to Ireland is complete without a keepsake or bottle of whiskey and there are plenty to be found at the Jameson Experience.
History of Jameson Whiskey
John Jameson was born in 1740, Scotland. He began his whiskey distillery in Dublin and set the family motto as ‘Sine Metu’ which means Without Fear.
He chose only the finest ingredients and would pay a high price for them. In fact, he was always willing to go that extra mile to ensure Jameson was outstanding, which is why Jameson is triple distilled for a smoother taste. He even tried to distil it many more times, but settled on three times as it never appeared to get any smoother.
He decided to go with a single distillery, given him optimum control over each stage. His distillery apparently began quite popular for social gatherings and remains so. John Jameson was a generous man, believing in quality and dedication favoured loyalty. He provisioned his staff with high wages and impeccable working conditions. Being a likeable and unique fellow, he nicknamed all his employees.
The Brazen Head pub is one of Ireland’s oldest. It’s said to be the place where John Jameson tested his whiskeys.
John Jameson shared his distillery business with his sons, and it was John Jameson II that expanded the distillery in Ireland around 1810. His son John III then expanded Jameson globally.
