Keeps the kids happy
Fota Wildlife Park is a day out that all the family can enjoy, set in scenic Fota and located only 15 minutes from Cork City and the Maryborough Hotel and Spa.
Follow the orange, blue and purple trails via foot or jump on the park train. Distributed across 70 acres of parkland are a host of endangered and vulnerable animals including cheetahs, monkeys, wallabies and flamingos and many others. There are not many places where you can feast your eyes on a rare red panda or watch a fertilised emu’s egg, which is why Fota Island Wildlife Park is so special.
Unlike most other zoos, the animals here are all free-roaming and there’s even a cheetah run; one of very few in the world. Some of the tamer animals are left to relax adjacent to the visitor walkway, unobscured by fencing.
Here is a selection of Fota’s wild residents:
• Agile Gibbon
• Chilean Flamingo
• Eastern Grey Kangaroo
• Red Panda
• Giant’s Zebra
If you are wondering what conservation is, then let me inform you; it’s the way in which we can protect biodiversity (various species) for future generations. Conservation is something that Fota Wildlife Park is passionate about and all donations that you make during your visit are dispersed around the world to many funds and charities. Part of conservation is to ensure that animals are protected in their own habitat (living environment), so it’s important that as many animals as possible are allowed to reside in their natural environments and sustain or increase in numbers.
While visiting, you will note that Fota Wildlife Park is keen for you to meet their newest residents. That’s because a number of their animals are endangered, so breeding programs are put in place to ensure their survival. Each new life is cherished because it’s one step closer to keeping a species alive.
Teamed with educational tours, trails and workshops, Fota Wildlife Park is sure to keep you entertained. You could coincide your visit with one of the park’s events, such as a magic show or camp. It’s a fun way to learn about nature and make new friends. For the adults – you can leave your kids and head somewhere more relaxing.
Fota Wildlife Park was voted one of Munster’s top ten visitor attractions in 2009 and top family friendly day out in 2009/2010
